I’ve been eager to get my hands on Ninjak for a while now. Ninjak #27 is a comic’s comic, its just bare bones comic book action. The issue is centered around three ninjas, two are evil and one works for the British Government. Ninjak is hired by the government to extract a scientist from a secret research facility in the middle east. Well things go sideways quickly.
Ninjak #27 is written by Kevin Maurer. He keeps the story moving fluidly. This story in particular doesn’t have hardly any filler. Kevin got me to feel for the characters, both bad and good. But the way he did it without bloated pretentious dialogue, was what made it work. Now I’m a sucker for drawn out dialogues, like Watchmen, but theres a time and place for such things. Tastefully Kevin did what the story called for and gave me ninjas killing things.
Cafu is the artist for Ninjak #27. The way he illustrates the story, whether its explosions, swords, or roundhouse kicks he sets the tone for the story. Cafu gives the story its own atmosphere or mood. The action is believable and for the lack of a better word, cool.
Ninjak #27 is what I’ve been aching for a while now. It feels like in some ways an ode to action films panning the 80’s and 90’s. But also I got a Metal Gear Solid vibe as well. But strongest of all was the GI JOE movie from 1987, which I rented every chance I got as a kid. Speaking of kids, this is a perfect comic to introduce young readers to. Be sure to add Ninjak #27 to your pull list this Wednesday. You can read my other reviews here.
