I am a big fan of Phillip K. Dick’s writing, always have been. Even though most of the movies based on his works bear little resemblance to what they are purportedly adapting, they still have a place in my heart. We have the brilliantly filmed Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? adaptation Blade Runner starring sci-fi icon Harrison Ford on one side, what many consider a perfect sci-fi film, and on the other side is Paycheck, an middling adaptation of We Can Remember it For You Wholesale starring the great director Ben Affleck. 2002’s Minority Report sits comfortably in the middle; not great, but worth watching.
The film, based on the short story of the same name, is a very loose adaptation. It had to be to fill out a feature film’s running time. Apparently, Fox didn’t think it was long enough though, and have ordered a put-pilot commitment with a significant penalty attached, which in non-tech-jargon terms means the network has to air the pilot or pay a large sum of money to the studio. It will be a co-production between Paramount, Amblin and 20th Century Fox TV , with a script by Godzilla’s Borenstein, with Amblin’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank as executive producers.
Taking place a decade after Precrime ceases to be in Washington D.C., the pilot, and I’m assuming the series, will follow one of the Precogs as he tries to make a normal life for himself, while still being haunted by visions of the future. He meets a detective haunted by her past who helps him in his struggles.
I’m guessing this series will be more Paycheck than Blade Runner.
