Legends of Tomorrow # 1
I almost never watch trailers or read the previews. Even when posting trailers for movies, I try not to watch them all the way through to tarnish my opinion of them. When Legends of Tomorrow was announced as a comic I was hoping it would be along the lines of The Adventures of Supergirl where it would be more closely linked to the television series than the original comic universe.
However, that is really my only disappointment with the four series in one book series. It has a feel of the Golden Age Justice Society of America where there were a handful of individual stories loosely linked to the team and that is what makes this series special.
The series features Firestorm, the Metal Men, Metamorpho and Sugar & Spike. The writing talents of Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Aaron Lopresti and Keith Giffen give each story their own flavor. Artists Eduardo Pansica, Rob Hunting, Yildiray Cinar, Trevor Scott, Matt Banning and Bilquis Evely make each story just that much better.
It’s difficult to to sum up each individual story as one book because each one could be their own series, but my favorite is Metal Men, not because of the characters themselves, but because of Len Wein and his writing style. Having the Metal Men face a cyber-terrorist called the Nameless plays a little into the real world fears of hacking and the dark web.
Legends of Tomorrow is really a buy-three-get-one-free set up. It’s four 22-page stories for $7.99 and may be just the way to go with beloved characters that cannot retain their own books for long running series. Maybe there would be a Brave and the Bold series in this fashion featuring Booster Gold, The Blue Beetle, Hawkman and The New Gods…just a thought.
Legends of Tomorrow is out today online and at your local comic shop.
