Escape Room LA’s The Pyramid Escape Room Review

GameStop, Inc.

Overview of The Pyramid Escape Room

The Pyramid Escape Room, Escape Room LA’s 5th installment in their collection of escape rooms, is one of the most unique and detail-oriented escape experiences I have experienced. In this escape room, you journey into a Mayan pyramid to find The Mask of the Jade Warrior to save a Mayan civilization, solving a series of puzzles and navigating through several rooms to find it.

Experience

We had the opportunity to escape The Pyramid before its release to the public, so some of the things I point out may or may not be in the room at the time of your playthrough. Our escape group consisted of 10 players with a range of experiences from first timers to people who have done over 30 escape rooms. Within this group, I would consider myself an avid escape room player with a decent enough amount of playtime in various scenarios. We were given 60 minutes to enter and escape. As I mentioned before, The Pyramid consists of several rooms and just to enter the pyramid, we had to solve puzzles. I thought this was a great idea, but because our group was so large and the entrance was so small, we ate up a lot of time just trying to navigate around each other. Once we got into “the pyramid”, we were finally immersed in the Mayan-inspired rooms.

The first set of rooms were constructed like an altar and observatory. These were great matching rooms where we made “sacrifices,” utilized Mayan animal references and had to decipher Aztec calendars. Even though you were trapped in these rooms, they were very spacious and our large group finally had room to move around freely. The puzzles in these rooms were probably the hardest ones of the whole experience, but they also blended well with each other. I can’t tell you enough about the creativity of these puzzles. All the electronic triggers and devices in these rooms were spot on and each puzzle solved lead seamlessly to the next puzzle. Teamwork was the biggest benefit of solving these rooms. My only main concern was that too many puzzles were available early-on and this created a lot of confusion for our group.

The next room we unlocked was like a cemetery and a guard room. We were tested with a set of puzzles to unlock the tomb where we knew the mask was. Without giving too much away, attention to small details and cooperation are key. Many of the challenges in this room were nowhere near as difficult as the first set of rooms, but still very entertaining. Some of the decorations and triggers in this room didn’t play out as well as the others and at times I felt I was going to break something. Our group got through this room quickly and it was a great setup for the tomb.

The tomb was a great final room for the game. We had to use a lot of what we learned from the previous rooms to conquer this room, but nothing too out of the ordinary of other escape rooms. The puzzles here were amusing and provided a little scare factor since we didn’t know where the mask was going to pop out. Now that everyone in our group had communication down, we solved everything smoothly. There were some technical issues within the room, but we knew going in that not everything was finalized. I thought this was the perfect way to end the experience. We escaped The Pyramid with about 8 minutes to spare!

Design and Visuals

I found this game to be extremely enjoyable on the aesthetics alone. Right as you jump into this challenge, you immediately notice how many Mayan-inspired artworks have been created to immerse you in the experience. After the game, we realized that many of the puzzles we solved had hints and clues that were all derived from the paintings. All of the architecture that you will see within the game has influences from actual Mayan designs in Latin America. They utilized ball court hoops, crypts, totems, statues and many other ancient symbols.

Speaking with the game designer, John Hennessy, he noted that he tried to use as little English text as possible and spent months researching the Mayan civilization before designing the actual game. He and his team even traveled to the Mayan pyramids to help create this game as accurate as possible. I was surprised that they put that much effort into making this escape room that realistic. This was definitely one of the most beautifully designed escape rooms I have played.

Conclusion

Overall, The Pyramid Escape Room is remarkable for how much detail they put into it. The experience is so immersive that you feel like you are actually in a Mayan Pyramid. The puzzles and tasks are a challenge but aren’t too hard to figure out and they focus a great deal on teamwork, which could make your playthrough great or disastrous, depending on your group. I would recommend that you at least get to know the people in your group and their experience with escape rooms before entering game. The ideal group size is around 6, otherwise, people are not doing much or doing too much. The difficulty of this room was set at 8/10, but I don’t think it is that challenging. I wouldn’t recommend this room for first timers alone, but if you’re going in with friends that are experienced, The Pyramid Escape Room should be the next room on your list.
