Total War is a real time strategy game akin to the likes of Star Craft that feature huge epic battles based on a grand historical epoch. Warhammer is the long-running miniature tabletop battle game that has had a cult following since its first release in 1978. Total War: Warhammer brings those figures to life, and keeps your hands clean from having to paint the figures, on a digital platform with endless possibilities. There was no hard date set for the game and unfortunately no chance to play it but from the battle they demoed for us, it truly seems like the epic scale they boast is present and even grander than the hype.
The most encompassing description that I can give is that the game play is RTS style like Star Craft, however you have some influence and control over an individual unit as you would in the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise. I am not sure if it will be full control, but there is definitely enough influence to make an impact on the battle. The fluid camera focus from whole field view to individual unit view was the catch for me; seeing thousands of units charge to zooming in on a one on one beat down in a manner of seconds is a cinematic piece of art. It’s like having control over the battles of 300. If you are able to fully control an individual unit, it would probably be the game that ruins my life entirely.
Sadly no release date or hard information on controls for Total War: Warhammer has been released, but the demo was very convincing and the lead writer Andy Hall shares a lot of great inside information. Check out the interview and subscribe to keep updated.
