I don’t know who wanted it, but it’s coming alright. The sequel to 1996’s smash hit Independence Day is coming next year with Independence Day: Resurgence, and today we have the first trailer for the sequel which brings Roland Emmerich back behind the camera. Of course, the original Independence Day hasn’t aged particularly well, existing as nothing more than an ultra-campy special effects show that first brought Will Smith to the forefront as the king of the ’90s blockbusters.
Smith isn’t returning to the sequel, though Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are back reprising their roles from the first film. But this first teaser is, frankly, lackluster and way too serious for its own good. Yes, Independence Day isn’t that good of a movie, but it had a marketing campaign unlike anything else, featuring more shots of wide spread destruction than story or character, but it put butts in the seats. This teaser makes me wonder if this wasn’t all some misguided journey deep into the heart of our nostalgia obsessed pop culture psyche, making us look deep into the abyss of trying to recreate the wonders of our youth at the expense of today. Not that it matters much.
Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters next year: June 24th, 2016. The effects-laden sequel also stars Liam Hemsworth, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Angelababy, William Fichtner, and Sela Ward. Some may be excited, but my indifference is palpable.
