Warner Brothers had a big day in San Diego today with their Hall H presentation that included trailers for Aquaman and Shazam!, but perhaps the biggest movie of them all was Godzilla: King of the Monsters, director Michael Dougherty‘s sequel to Gareth Edwards 2014 smash. The iconic monster returns once again to face down some of his most famous foes, including Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed beast King Ghidorah. All of this monster on monster mayhem is leading up to the upcoming collision of franchises in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which will see King of the Monsters battle it out with the recently rebooted Kong from last year’s Kong: Skull Island.
While the monsters are the star of the show in this Godzilla sequel, Dougherty has assembled quite an impressive cast of humans who will have to stand in awe of the towering creatures battling before them. Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, and Sally Hawkins headline a cast that also includes Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown, The Wolf of Wall Street‘s Kyle Chandler, Straight Outta Compton‘s O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.
While the trailer tries to sell us on the idea that the fate of humanity lies in the balance, that’s not entirely true as we know that Godzilla: King of the Monsters has a sequel all set for a year later with Godzilla vs. Kong. How we get to the two iconic monsters mashing it out on the screen will have to wait until after Godzilla: King of the Monsters comes roaring into theaters on May 31, 2019.
The official synopsis for Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
