Go Big and Send Your Opponents Home – Gigantic Review [PC]

GameStop, Inc.

Face up, square off, and size up your opponents in Perfect World Entertainment Inc.’s GiganticGigantic Review

Perfect World Inc. officially launches their 3rd person MOBA game, Gigantic today on Steam, Arc, Xbox One, and Windows 10. Gigantic places players in a mystical where players play as human-like creatures to take down their opponents in order to open up a path for you Gigantic deity to take on their Gigantic deity. It’s a fast paced, action-filled, beautifully designed game that gives a fresh take on traditional MOBA games.

My biggest disappointment with Gigantic is the lack of an obvious story mode and campaign. The characters and world have a really unique and captivating look, and I feel it is not explored nearly enough. This is generally the case with MOBA games, and it bothers me. A few voiced lines and a tutorial are not satisfying enough. What happened to lead to this war? Are there other Gigantic deities? If you do not appease your deity does it eat you? I NEED ANSWERS.

Since the story is lacking… Gameplay is where it is at. It controls a lot like a 3rd person action game, which is my favorite part of it. Many characters have a run feature, but all have a jump, which gives you the ability to really use the Three-Dimensional space. It adds a more organic feel and natural use of the environment. The main goal of the game is to weaken you enemies’ defenses so your deity can pin theirs down and you can deliver a decisive blow. First to do so 3 times wins. You weaken your enemies’ defenses by defeating enemy players and taking down their turrets. What I like about the turrets in Giagantic, that I feel is superior to most other MOBA’s, is the ability to choose the type of turret that is placed. You can go for DPS, Defense, Healing, and other types as you unlock them later. This leads for a variation every match you play, despite the level… at least until the quote unquote best “strategies” come into play. I typed out quote unquote because I think those “best strategies” are in large part bogus.

Gigantic has a very unique look to it. I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s like a cel-shaded-ish 3D animation. I am not well versed in art styles, but I really like what is used. The character designs are simultaneously cute and badass, which is usually a very widely admired look that appeals to the masses. The sound quality doesn’t match up to the graphics, however. It’s not bad, but it still seems like sound from a top-down look MOBA instead of a fully rendered 3D environment.

Lastly, the unlock/purchase system is also a bit disappointing. Mainly because I feel it doesn’t hook you in right way. This is not including if you purchased the Founder’s Pack/Ultimate Pack. You aren’t given many characters to choose from, and it is a noticeably long amount of time until you are able to unlock someone. I understand the free-to-play model, but I think to attract players from other free-to-play games, you’re going to need to offer them something substantial early to hook them in.

Overall, Gigantic is a gorgeously designed game that is fun and a refreshing take on MOBA games. The 3rd Person action game controls allow players to be more immersed into the game and allows them to take advantage of the masterfully designed environments. While the free-to-play model is no great improvement, and the story is largely absent, I think fans of the strategic nature will flock to Gigantic once they catch wind of it. My Gigantic review gets a 7/10.

*Sidenote, Arc gaming launcher does not have a feature to take screenshots. Highly recommend playing on Steam.
