Today is looking like a great day for DC Comic fans. We saw the first footage of The Flash earlier today, and now the first images of Welsh actor Matt Ryan in character as John Constantine have surfaced, and he looks exactly like his DC/Vertigo comic counterpart. All that’s missing is a cigarette, though I for one doubt this televised version of the character will be a smoker. He’s got the tousled hair, the five o’clock shadow, the unbuttoned shirt and loose tie, and of course the brown trench coat. Yep, that’s him all right. The NBC pilot, written by David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone, and directed by Neil Marshall, began filming this week for likely release in the fall if indeed picked up by NBC.
These pictures were found at the Facebook page of Slates For Sarah, as a tribute to Sarah Elizabeth Jones, a young camera assistant killed during production of the Gregg Allman biopic, Midnight Rider, on February 20th, 2014.
So far, after only two pictures, this seems to be shaping up to be a much more faithful adaptation than the 2005 big screen film starring Keanu Reeves as an American version of the fan-favorite occult detective. I’m sure there will be more pictures in the weeks to come, and maybe a trailer in time for San Diego’s Comic-Con International this summer. I for one can’t wait to see it!
(UPDATE) WBTV has released this first official promotional photograph of the English anti-hero, and he looks like he jumped right off the page!
