I used to love the Disney Afternoon animation block when I was younger, the thrilling adventures of the Gummy Bears, Darkwing Duck, and of course DuckTales always made my afternoon snacktime so much better. I knew they were bringing Huey, Dewey, Louie, and the rest back for new adventures, but missed it when it aired. I heard great things about it on social media which made me even sadder I missed it. Lucky for me, and all of you, Disney is releasing the pilot episode on DVD today. So what’s the verdict? It’s pretty damn good.
When Donald goes out to a job interview he leaves the triplets with their trillionaire treasure hunter uncle Scrooge McDuck. Along with their new friend Webby, the quartet is joined by pilot (as he mentions continuously) Launchpad McQuack as they face off against supernatural creatures and an evil corporation, and go on the road trip of a lifetime to the lost city of Atlantis.
The thing I first noticed is that Huey, Dewey, and Louie have so much more that sets them apart other than different colored shirts this time around. Each of them have different outfits now, but also diverse personalities. Webby, voiced by one half of Garfunkel & Oates, Kate Micucci, is a great addition to the crew, and David Tenant is perfect as uncle Scrooge. The entire cast does an excellent job of bringing this fun story to life.
The animation is an updated, more stylized look sure to please old fans while instantly endearing itself to new viewers. The story is charming and seriously smile-inducing with some genuinely hilarious gags, and its meager 44 minute runtime left me wanting more.
The DVD also contains six other shorts re-introducing us to the characters. If you loved DuckTales like I did, or just Disney in general, get on down to Duckburg and grab yourself a copy.
DuckTales: Woo-oo! is in stores today, December 12th.
