In the back of a comic book store in Hollywood they met in (almost secret). This isn’t a Honda commercial; this is comedy. On Tuesday August 13, Chris Hardwick was hard at work trying material for his new show @Midnight. The show, as implied by the name, is expected to premiere at midnights on Comedy Central in the upcoming season.
The back of Meltdown Comics, the site of the LA Nerdmelt theater, is about the size of a small one bedroom apartment in a city. Black folding chairs with the word “Nerdist” emblazoned in white paint on the back are packed into every available nook and cranny. A large pull down screen, not unlike something one would see at a work convention is pulled down with a live Twitter feed showing the not so secret thoughts of every person who comments @Midnight in their tweet. Many folks are “Excited to be” there. Many are wondering how they “fit so many nerds in such a tight spot.”
The nerds, myself included, were gathered for a test run of Hardwick’s new comedy game show, @Midnight. Three contestants (for our round truly entertaining but lesser known comedians) are presented with humor challenges and current pop culture trivia. Despite his work using the format many times with BBC America’s The Nerdist television show, Hardwick is hard at work to make sure he perfects his trivia techniques with a possible live audience. In place of commercials, Hardwick delighted in playing random videos from Vine.
Hardwick is genuinely funny, preparing the crowd with anecdotes about his father and girlfriend, but keeps the atmosphere friendly; it almost feels like the participants are talking to that extra funny guest at a party. Hardwick’s next performance will be on Tuesday, August 20th at 9 p.m. Tickets for NerdMelt nights can be found here: http://nerdmeltla.com/
