Do you remember a time before the internet brought media to people? Before the time of youtube, game trailers and let’s plays? How did you choose which games to buy (or ask for for Christmas)? More often than not, you saw a box. Maybe it had man in a blue and yellow suit with a laser gun. Maybe it had a guy who looked like He-man staring at a castle with a vampire in the background. Video game box art often sold us on a game that many probably knew nothing about. A new kickstarter aims to tell the story and history of video game box art with “Box Art: A Gaming Documentary.”
Launched on April 19th and running until May 20th, “Box Art: A Gaming Documentary” is the next film from “Nintendo Quest” director, Rob McCallum. With over one hundred people on board, ranging from artists to developers, “Box Art” aims to tell the untold story of the history of box arts and how the craft has evolved and developed since the days of Atari.
In addition to the standard DVD and Blu-ray reward options, the “Box Art” kickstarter campaign also offers physical rewards such as: numbered game boxes, sponsorship opportunities, and original development art from the NES and SNES eras. Depending on the amount raised, the documentary could go from a 90 minute feature to possibly a full on documentary series.
McCallum’s last film, “Nintendo Quest,” was successfully funded on Kickstarter and released by Canamedia in November. He also tripled the base goal and achieved all the stretch goals for his recent Kickstarter documentary, “Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”, which he is co-directing with “Turtle Power” director Randall Lobb, set for release in 2017. These projects are in addition to other films he’s directing including “Kittie: Origins/Evoltions,” and his most personal film to date, “Missing Mom.” Both also had successful crowdfunding campaigns and are due for release in 2016.
