After a brief cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and being one of the few standouts in last year’s Justice League, it’s now time for Jason Momoa to take the lead in Warner Brothers’ latest superhero adventure, Aquaman. The first trailer for James Wan‘s film debuted earlier today at San Diego Comic-Con and it’s, um, something. Look, I’m not too familiar with the character from the comics so it’s not like I’m looking at this trailer for its devotion to the source material or anything else. Simply, I want what has been rather lacking in most DC Movies of late — a bit of fun.
I think that the cheeky sense of humor of James Wan and the leading charms of Jason Momoa might be enough to make Aquaman more entertaining than its DC brethren, but I fear that this plot might be a bit too convoluted and rather silly based on this trailer. However, I’ll say that Aquaman really does look to be the most colorful of the recent DC films and here’s hoping that the film’s sensibilities match its color palate.
Co-starring alongside Momoa in Aquaman is Amber Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, and Patrick Wilson as Orm, the film’s antagonist. Warner Brothers and DC will take audiences to a whole new realm of comic book fantasy when Aquaman lands in theaters on December 21, 2018.
The official synopsis for Aquaman:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.
