While much of the future of what is commonly referred to as the DC Expanded Universe remains in flux after Justice League and its cool reception with critics and audiences, Warner Brothers is still chugging along with a number of projects based upon DC’s stable of heroes and villains. Among the heroes headlining their own films is Jason Momoa as Aquaman in James Wan‘s upcoming aquatic adventure titled, you guessed it, Aquaman. With the December 21st release date of Aquaman nearing closer, Warner Brothers just released an extended trailer for the film, giving us a full five minutes of Atlantean action.
This extended trailer for Aquaman gives us plenty of information about James Wan’s first foray into superhero cinema. We’re given a bit of biographical information about Arthur Curry (Momoa) and how he’s a man between two worlds, one of the land and one of the sea with his mother being Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman). What this trailer pulls off really well is highlighting the offbeat sense of humor that Jason Momoa has brought to the character since being one of the few standouts in last year’s Justice League. Arthur is going to be dragged into an adventure that he’s uninterested in by Mera (Amber Heard), but what they discover is going to lead to a struggle for control of Atlantis, with Aquaman set to face down Orm (Patrick Wilson).
The very nature of Aquaman means this film has some tricky technical obstacles to overcome to make its way to convincingly the big screen. This is a special effects heavy production with multiple scenes that are taking place at the bottom of the sea, meaning I wouldn’t considering any of these shots from the finished film but finished enough to put into a trailer. Wan is a deft visual storyteller with a silly sense of humor and that combination could make Aquaman an unexpected audience favorite. Aquaman is penned by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall from a story by Geoff Johns & James Wan and Beall,
Check out all five minutes of Aquaman in this extended trailer, including the first look of Jason Momoa in the iconic Aquaman costume. Warner Brothers will be bringing the DC hero to theaters everywhere on December 21, 2018.
